How Often Should You Shampoo?

Shampooing can be a bit of a mystery. Should it be done every day? Once a week? The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—it depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and the products you're using. Let’s break it down to make it easy to figure out what works best for you.

Hair Type Matters

How often you should shampoo largely depends on your hair type. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Fine Hair: Fine hair tends to get oily faster, so washing it more frequently—about every other day—can keep it looking fresh and full of volume.

  • Thick or Curly Hair: Thicker or curlier hair tends to be drier since natural oils take longer to travel down the hair shaft. Shampooing once or twice a week is usually enough, paired with a good conditioning routine.

  • Color-Treated Hair: If you’ve got color-treated hair, you’ll want to preserve that fresh color as long as possible. Stick to washing 2-3 times a week with a color-safe shampoo.

  • Dry or Damaged Hair: Over-washing can strip moisture from already dry or damaged hair, so try to limit shampooing to once or twice a week and focus on hydrating and reparative products.

Lifestyle Factors

Your day-to-day activities play a big role in how often you should shampoo.

  • Workouts: If you're working out regularly and sweating, you may feel like you need to wash your hair more often. Instead of shampooing every time, rinse your hair with water or use a dry shampoo before your workout to absorb excess oil and freshen things up.

  • Product Build-Up: If you use a lot of styling products like mousse, sprays, or dry shampoo, you might need to shampoo more often to keep your scalp clean and clear of residue.

  • Scalp Health: If you have a sensitive scalp or issues like dandruff, you'll want to pay attention to how your scalp feels. Using a shampoo specifically for scalp care a few times a week can help maintain balance without overdoing it.

The Sweet Spot for Most Hair Types

For the average person with “normal” hair and not a lot of product build-up, shampooing 2-3 times a week is the sweet spot. This schedule helps strike a balance between keeping your scalp clean and maintaining your hair’s natural moisture.

Stretching Out Time Between Washes

Want to extend the time between washes? Here are a few tips:

  • Dry Shampoo: This is a lifesaver for stretching your wash days, especially for fine hair or anyone with oily roots. I like to apply dry shampoo the night before I get oily because you are getting ahead of the oil.

  • Clarifying Shampoo: Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove any product build-up or residue that regular shampoos might miss. Be mindful of color treated hair.

  • Cool Water Rinses: If you're in a rush, a quick rinse with cool water can refresh your hair and keep oil at bay without stripping the hair of its natural oils. Sometimes I find that I wish I would’ve washed my hair instead of the rinse because my hair still feels heavy.

Listen to Your Hair

At the end of the day, it’s all about what makes your hair feel and look its best. If your hair feels greasy and weighed down, it might be time to shampoo. If it feels dry or brittle, you might be over-washing.

Whether you wash every day or once a week, the key is finding the right balance that works for your hair type and lifestyle.
