Summer Hair Guide
Ah, summer - the season of beaches, ice cream, and poolside lounging. But with all that fun in the sun comes some serious hair damage. Here's your ultimate summer hair care guide to keep your locks looking luscious all season long.
Summer Hair Guide
Chlorine/ Pool Water: The chemicals in chlorine leave hair feeling dry and brittle and can turn blonde strands green. Wear a swim cap if you can. Before jumping in the pool get your hair wet and apply conditioner to your hair. Once done swimming, wash with a swimmers shampoo designed to specially remove chlorine from the hair.
Salt Water: Salt water contributes to frizz, dries out the hair AND can damage the cuticle. Apply a treatment or leave-in conditioner to the hair before getting in the ocean, then rinse with fresh water after getting out. Shampoo when you can and moisturize the hair!
Sun: The sun breaks down your hair's outer layers of lipids, which act as a natural protection from the environmental elements. Without this layer it isn't able to retain moisture and becomes dry, frizzy hair. Apply a sun protecting product before heading outside and use a scalp treatment weekly.
Wear a hat: Not only does it protect your face from the sun, but it also protects your hair from sun damage. Hats are super cute and can add a fun accessory to your summer look.
Air Conditioning: Air conditioning leaves the hair super dry. Use deep conditioners and leave-in treatment sprays regularly. Drink lots of water and add a humidifier in your room if needed.
Hard Water: Hard water is full of minerals that contribute to faster color fading, brittle hair, dryness, and frizz. Use a color protecting product prior to showering, have a mineral removing treatment in the salon, and invest in a filter for your shower head.
Limit heat styling: Heat styling tools can be extra harmful in summer when hair is more compromised. Embrace heatless, air-dried styles like braids, loose ponies and topknots. Always use a thermal protector and UV spray while using hot tools.
Hairline Breakage: When the weather gets hot, it’s tempting to toss your hair up in a high pony or topknot all the time! But the strain it can put on the hair (depending on how often you wear your hair like this) can result in breakage along the hairline. Change up low and high ponies, different types of braids and buns into your summer styling rotation.
Always use a silk or satin pillowcase: Opt for silk or satin pillowcases to minimize friction and reduce breakage caused by rough fabric. The smooth surface allows your hair to glide gently, decreasing tangles, frizz, and the risk of split ends.
Use the proper shampoo and conditioner: Use products specifically designed for color-treated hair, strengthening, UV protection, or a swimmers formula for your specific needs. Avoid using harsh shampoos that can strip your hair of its natural oils.
Use a deep conditioning treatment or oil: Use at least once a week to help restore moisture and protect your hair color.
Limit washing: Washing your hair too frequently can strip it of its natural oils, causing your color to fade. Try to wash your hair no more than 4 times per week.
Use cool water: Hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause color to fade, so try to wash your hair with cool or lukewarm water.
Add a clear gloss for protection: Gloss treatments provide a boost of intense conditioning for your hair by closing around the hair shaft and cuticle. The result is smoother hair with less frizz, fewer flyaway hairs and protects from harsh effects of the sun, making your hair more manageable and easier to style. Gloss treatments last about 20 shampoos.
With these tips, you'll be able to enjoy your summer adventures without worrying about your hair color fading or becoming as damaged. So go out there and have some fun in the sun!

Chlorine sucks the natural oils from your hair and skin leaving them dry, damaged and irritated.
Here’s a few ways to help minimize the damage of chlorine.

2. Wet your hair with water to dilute the pool water absorption.
3. Apply a conditioner to your hair to help prevent chlorine from absorbing.

Damage from chlorine doesn’t have to be permanent. You can reduce the damage with some TLC.
Here are a 3 ways you can repair damage from chlorine.
1. Rinse your hair IMMEDIATELY- Don’t let the chlorine sit in your hair. The longer it’s on, the harder it is to remove.
2. Use a wide tooth comb- Hair with chlorine build up tends to be tangly, sticky or slimy. Use the wide tooth comb to prevent breakage.
3. Clarify your hair- Remove any harsh chemicals from your hair with a clarifying swimmers shampoo or salon swimmers treatment.
